NEWS MEDIA CONFERENCE
ASIA-PACIFIC REGIONAL COMMITTEE of the INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION OF SECURITIES COMMISSIONS (IOSCO)
The Securities Commission is hosting the annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Regional Committee of IOSCO in Wellington
on Friday 19th February 2004. This is the first time an IOSCO committee has met in New Zealand.
Chairmen and enforcement directors from securities commissions throughout the Asia-Pacific region are attending.
Countries represented are Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia,
Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Viet Nam.
The aim of the APRC is to foster cooperation between securities regulators for effective supervision and enforcement of
securities laws.
Chairman of the meeting is Datuk Ali Abdul Kadir, who is also the Chairman of the Securities Commission of Malaysia.
Speaking after the last APRC meeting in Sri Lanka, Mr Kadir said that securities markets face many challenges in
uncertain global conditions. He stressed the need for securities regulators to be highly vigilant and responsive in
order to minimise the impact of such risks.
