The Waikato branch of the Motor Trade Association (MTA) is encouraging motor technicians to enter Spanner Man of the
Year – because of its combination of fun heats and serious skill tests.
“Give it a go,” says MTA Business Development Manager Barry Norris, who also says while the inaugural National Motor
Show Spanner Man of the Year competition does test motor technicians’ mechanical skills, it’s definitely not daunting.
“It’s not too serious - we’re not asking them to be Einsteins - it will be covering every-day life in a workshop among
other things.”
Spanner Man of the Year is a competition run by the team at the NZ National Motor Show, in association with Motor
Equipment News and Radio Hauraki. Entrants must be primarily employed as automotive technicians, aged over 18 - and
totally passionate about the motor industry, according to competitions coordinator Kate McGowan.
“As a finalist the heat activities will test skill, theory and attitude,” she says.
“And the prizes are just amazing for both the winner and all seven technicians who make it to the final competition.”
The spectator-friendly heats run over three days of the National Motor Show with the final presentation of the Golden
Spanner and prestigious title on the final day.
In addition to the title and trophy, the winner will take back to their workshop the Teng Tools 1001 set, a personalised
plate, Dickies clothing and many other motor-related prizes.
Applicants will be tested on every-day workshop activities, their true passion for the industry and also have a good
time in the process.
Interest from applicants has come from as far as Whangarei, Wellington and Ngaruawahia.
The NZ National Motor Show runs 19-21 March 2004 at Mystery Creek Events Centre, Hamilton, and will have on display the
hottest range of new model cars under one roof.
