Ports of Auckland Volumes Index Update

Total container volumes* were up 6% to 656,836 TEUs for the 12 months to end-November 2003 (as compared to the 12 months
to end-November 2002) and down 1% for November 2003 compared to November 2002.
Full imports increased 7% for the 12 months to end-November 2003, while full export container volumes were unchanged for
the period. For the month of November full imports were up 2% and full exports were down 9%.
Transhipment** volumes rose 13% for the month of November and 3% for the for the 12 months to end-November 2003.
Containers comprise approximately 70% of Ports of Auckland’s throughput and about 85% of business activity.
Breakbulk (non-containerised) volumes were up 11% to 4.7 million tonnes for the 12 months to end-November 2003. November
2003 volumes increased 41% on November 2002.
* Container volumes are measured in TEUs (20-foot equivalent units – or the size of a standard 20-foot container).
** Transhipment containers are discharged at Auckland and reshipped on another vessel to international or other New
Zealand destinations.
