Climate Change and Business Conference & Trade Expo for Auckland
Auckland is to host an international conference next year that will explore the business opportunities arising from
climate change.
Announcing the event from the ninth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate
Change in Milan, the Conference convenor Gary Taylor said that whether or not the Russians ratify the Kyoto Protocol,
climate change "is here to stay."
"Markets and business face both risks and opportunities as countries develop their responses to the serious problem of
global warming. Australia, as a non-ratifying country, has still committed itself to action to reduce its emissions and
has a number of incentivising policies in place that create new opportunities for business," said Mr Taylor.
"New Zealand, as a ratifying country, has its own suite of policies including Negotiated Greenhouse Agreements and the
Projects Mechanism. It has also signalled a carbon tax to take effect from 2007.
"Given the close linkages between our two economies, it makes good sense to hold a combined forum where we explore the
implications of the policy settings for business and think creatively about new ways forward.
"Moreover, there are huge opportunities in other countries. We're intending to focus on China and Japan, where emission
reduction initiatives are keenly sought and innovation and technology offer hope for curbing the upward spiral of global
emissions."
The Conference is being organised by 7 partner organisations that reflect the wide interest in climate change:-
In New Zealand: the Environmental Defence Society; the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development; the New
Zealand Council of Trade Unions.
In Australia: the Business Council of Australia; the Australian Business Council for Sustainable Development; the
Australian Council of Trade Unions.
In the USA: the Pew Center on Global Climate Change.
The event is being supported by the Australian Greenhouse Office and the New Zealand Climate Change Office.
"We're very pleased to have the support of both the Australian and New Zealand governments," said Mr Taylor. "In spite
of the different approaches on the ratification issue, it demonstrates that both countries are committed to action. If
the Kyoto Protocol does not come into force, countries are still responding to the greenhouse challenge.
"In many respects, we are at a turning point in history. Over the next few decades, the world will move from fossil fuel
dependency to the renewables era. This transition will involve a close focus on energy efficiency, cleaner energy and
making renewables commercially viable. Better energy management is good for the environment and for the bottom line.
"There are also huge opportunities in the primary production sector and for those who provide relevant consulting
services. Businesses in Australia and New Zealand are well-placed to take advantage of these growing opportunities," Mr
Taylor concluded.

There will be a combination of plenary sessions (scene-setting and keynote speakers) and concurrent sessions. The

trading; risk management) and markets (China; Japan; Australia; New Zealand; Europe; USA; the Pacific Islands).
There will not be a formal "call for papers' process.
