Residential Building Work Up 6 Percent
The seasonally adjusted value of residential building work put in place was 6 percent higher in the September 2003
quarter than in the June 2003 quarter, according to Statistics New Zealand. The actual value of residential building
work put in place was $1,698 million in the September 2003 quarter. The trend for the value of residential building work
put in place has been steadily increasing since the March 2001 quarter.
The value of non-residential building work put in place in the September 2003 quarter was $931 million. Commercial
buildings made the largest contribution to non-residential building work put in place with $259 million or 28 percent of
the total. This was followed by miscellaneous buildings with $207 million or 22 percent and education buildings with
$149 million or 16 percent.
The trend for the value of non-residential building work has been increasing since the March 2003 quarter. For the
September 2003 quarter, the total value of all building work put in place was $2,629 million.
The seasonally adjusted value of all building work put in place was 8 percent higher in the September 2003 quarter than
in the June 2003 quarter. Since the March 2001 quarter, the trend for the value of all building work put in place has
been steadily increasing. Residential building work put in place contributed 65 percent of the total value of all
building work put in place in the September 2003 quarter, compared with 62 percent in the September 2002 quarter.
