Emerging Funding Package And A Strategy For Faster Transport Network Completion, Begs One Big Question!
Who Will Be Accountable For Delivering The Solution?
Commenting on a report detailing a funding package to be considered by Government to solve Auckland’s transport
problems, Michael Barnett, chief executive of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce said it is very obvious that if the
solution is to be delivered in an efficient and timely way, then the region needs one voice speaking on Auckland’s
transport.
“It seems the funding barrier is being addressed. We have a strategy for completing the roading and rail networks and
improving public transport services. We now need an accountable structure to ensure the strategy and money is spent in a
fiscally responsible and efficient way,” said Mr Barnett.
Urgent consideration is also needed to ensure that the package unveiled in December is supported by a single,
accountable entity that takes charge of all Auckland transport planning, funding and delivery aspects.
“Auckland is in its mess on transport because no one is accountable for delivering the overall network solution. Roading
is looked after in different corners depending on whether it is a state highway or a local road. Similarly, public
transport is split between a host of planning and provider groups. Political accountability is fragmented among central,
regional and local government.”
“We got into this mess through our failure to organise ourselves properly. A big part of the solution is to ensure that
the funding and strategy is delivered through a single, accountable entity – otherwise the implementation of the package
will be at risk,” warned Mr Barnett.
