Printer Cartridge Reminder- Don't Bin, Recycle! Clean Up New Zealand Week 15 ? 21 September 2003
With Clean Up New Zealand Week well underway, New Zealanders are reminded that cleaning up the environment and decreasing landfill can start at work and in the home office.
Over the last four years the Toner Recycling Centre (TRC) has been recycling printer toner cartridges through a free programme aimed at helping preserve the environment by reducing cartridge waste.
When companies or individuals give their waste cartridges to TRC they are rewarded with reimbursement (either by cheque or vouchers) or alternatively, they can choose to donate their cartridge value to Ronald McDonald House Charities. Established in New Zealand in 1989, Ronald McDonald House Charities supports Ronald McDonald Houses, as well as other projects that help children lead happier healthier lives.
TRC's programme was awarded at the recent Packaging Council of NZ biennial awards, winning the award for excellence for the most successful educational/promotional programme encouraging materials recovery.
The company has been a key supporter of Ronald McDonald House Charities for two years and manager Jim Hawkins says that approximately 30% of TRC's customers now choose to donate their cartridge value to the charity.
"This has seen TRC customers donate over $160,000 to Ronald McDonald House Charities in the last two years," says Mr Hawkins.
"With more than 209 tonnes of cartridges dumped into New Zealand landfills each year, Kiwis need to realise the impact of putting cartridges in the rubbish and start considering options which can make a tangible difference.
"Many New Zealanders ?- both individuals and businesses ?- are yet to take simple recycling steps which can benefit not only the environment, but also a worthwhile children's charity."
