GULL PETROLEUM CHALLENGES BP TO FOLLOW ITS LEAD

Gull Petroleum is not surprised at today's news that BP Oil New Zealand has been forced to make changes to its
nationwide television advertising campaign after the Commerce Commission raised concerns that the ads could mislead
consumers.
Gull Retail Operations Manager Ulrik Olsen said that consumer confidence in petroleum companies was of paramount
importance and that the Commerce Commission's vigilance in this area is reassuring.
"Petrol companies must take greater care to ensure the statements they make are accurate and do not have the potential
to mislead the public. This is particularly important when it comes to issues of fuel quality and the environment," Mr
Olsen said.
Mr Olsen said that Gull Petroleum takes pride in being the only fuel retailer in New Zealand to supply low sulphur
diesel as standard across its entire network of outlets. The family-owned company recently received a prestigious "E"
Environmental Award from the Auckland Regional Council for its commitment to caring for the air. Gull also sponsors
energy efficiency initiatives, employs vapour recovery systems at most of its sites and has lobbied strongly for
improvements to New Zealand's fuel quality standards.
"We are unmatched by any of our competitors in our commitment to the environment," he said.
"Gull is an independent company. We believe in choice, doing the right thing by New Zealand consumers and doing the
right thing by the environment. We will continue to challenge the multinational oil companies like BP to follow our lead
on environment," Mr Olsen said.
