Beach Hop – Rock & Roll
The trade mark BEACH HOP, filed by A J Park for the Beach Hop Whangamata Rock n Roll Festival Society Incorporated, is the first multi-class trade mark application to be filed in New Zealand since the introduction of the new Trade Marks Act on 20 August, 2003.
Damon Butler, a trade mark lawyer at A J Park, says since the new Trade Marks Act came into force on 20 August, New Zealand businesses can now file one trade mark application to cover a number of different classes of goods and services.
“The Beach Hop Whangamata Rock n Roll Festival Society Incorporated runs a music and car festival with a Rock and Roll theme annually in Whangamata. They have filed an application to register the trade mark BEACH HOP for those types of events and also in the areas of associated merchandise, videos, printed material and clothing”.
“Under the old regime they would have had to file separate applications to register BEACH HOP for each class of goods and services.
Damon Butler says the main advantage of being able to submit a single multi-class trade mark application is that filing and renewal costs will be reduced.
He says it also brings us into line with other countries such as the USA, the UK and Australia.
