It’s Time To Get On With Business
Telecom Chief Executive Theresa Gattung has challenged TelstraClear to drop its appeals against the Telecommunications Commissioner’s determinations on interconnection and business wholesaling.
“It’s time we all got on with the business of serving customers instead of tying ourselves up in endless regulatory reviews,” said Ms Gattung in a speech to the Fourth Annual New Zealand Telecommunications and ICT Summit.
“The Commissioner’s two main decisions have been followed up with appeals from TelstraClear for pricing reviews. Telecom’s had no choice but to counter appeal because of the rights given appellants in the appeal process.
“I think it’s come to the point where it is counter productive and my challenge is this: if TelstraClear drops its appeals we’ll follow suit and drop ours.”
Ms Gattung said she felt the industry was far enough into the new environment for there to be some consensus about what regulation can and cannot deliver for customers.
“In reality, regulation is no nirvana. It might clear some bottlenecks, real or perceived, but then it’s a matter of getting on and delivering for customers.”
