Life-Saving Security Officer Takes National Title
Quick decision-making, compassion and professionalism that were directly responsible for saving a life were among the
qualities which have earned Sky City Auckland security officer Taua Ioane the title Security Officer of the Year.
The award was announced at this year’s New Zealand Security Association (NZSA) security symposium in Christchurch on
Friday night.
Mr Ioane was off duty when he observed a woman showing signs of distress and on investigation, discovered her husband
had tried to take his life.
“By keeping the woman in a calm situation, she was able to phone and communicate with ambulance personnel while Taua was
able to attend to the man who was not breathing,” says NZSA executive director Barrie Cooper.
Mr Ioane has been employed by Sky City Auckland Ltd for the past two years and during that time there have been many
instances when he has gone beyond “the call of duty” and has exemplified professionalism as a security officer, noted
the panel which selected him from applicants for the award.
During the past 12 months, whilst carrying out his normal duties, Mr Ioane has assisted police significantly,
identifying several suspects. Through Mr Ioane’s actions, all cases ended with the offenders being arrested. In
addition, Mr Ioane’s training as a medic, has also led to him assisting many people with a range of medical complaints.
Sky City’s Executive Manager Security and Surveillance, Kate McGregor, says that the team is delighted that Taua has won
the award.
“As a 24 hour entertainment complex with comprehensive operations, we have a diverse range of security needs and the
role of a Sky City security officer is also more customer focused than traditional security positions.
“Included in Taua’s work is the monitoring of Sky City Auckland’s busy carpark, which is used by in excess of 15,000
people a day. He successfully maintains a safe environment for Sky City customers and quickly and effectively resolves
any issues with minimum disruption.
“His excellent memory and attention to detail have also enabled him to work successfully with the Police on several
occasions,” says Ms McGregor.
“His performance is supported by numerous commendations and thank you letters from customers and staff who have had the
pleasure of experiencing his professionalism when dealing with a range of situations presented both on and off duty.
Certificates of merit were also presented to finalists for the award: Winston Perrow of Waitemata Health; and Shayne
Birch and Howie Clarke of Matrix Security of Auckland.
