Leading Motoring Organisations Merge
The face of the motor industry is set to change with the final stages of a merger between leading motoring organisations
approved today. The Motor Trade Association (MTA) and Motor Vehicle Dealers Institute (MVDI) first proposed the merger
in April this year, after extensive discussions between the two organisations, following the passing into law of the
Motor Vehicle Sales Act.
Members of both groups had the opportunity to vote on the merger at SGMs held in May. MVDI members were also required to
vote on the winding up of the association at a second SGM which took place in Wellington today.
The merged organisation, to be known as the Motor Trade Association (Inc.), which now has over 6,000 members, continues
to be based out of the MTA’s National Office in Wellington.
MVDI Executive Director Steve Downes believes the move is a positive one for all members.
“The new organisation will provide all members with a more credible industry voice, higher operational standards, a
stronger, more financially robust organisation and greater economies of scale.”
MTA Chief Executive Officer Stephen Matthews says consumers will benefit from the merger as well.
“For several years now the MTA has operated a consumer Contact Centre, which gives members and their customers recourse
to address any problems that may arise. Once the new legislation commences, this service will be extended to those MVDI
members who have chosen to belong to the MTA, effectively giving customers a safety net when purchasing a vehicle or
using any MTA member.”
