Weather Continues to Aid Power Savings
Weather patterns continued to have a significant affect on the national electricity savings effort with the South
Island’s warm spell and a cold snap in the lower North Island reflected in the weekly regional savings figures.
A wetter but warmer spell in the South Island compared to this time last year, helped savings figures for both the lower
and upper South Island beat the Target 10% goal. The region from Dunedin south reached a record 12.6% saving while
Christchurch and north passed 11%.
Colder weather during the week in the lower North Island was the major contributor to a two percent drop in the savings
effort from the capital and the small gain only in the Central North Island, while Auckland and the Far North continued
to make steady progress.
Winter Power Taskforce co-ordinator Patrick Strange said that while the prospects of waterheating cuts were receding as
the lake levels rose and the excellent savings continued, it remained prudent to continue with energy conservation
measures.
