First Time Win For Sky At The Qantas Media Awards
SKY Television's inaugural entries at the Qantas Media Awards held last Friday saw them walk away with an award for
"Best Television Coverage of a Sporting Event in 2002".
SKY Sport 1's coverage of last year's Air New Zealand Division One NPC final between Auckland and Waikato - produced by
Richard Mason and directed by Gavin Service - earned SKY the coveted accolade.
Another SKY production was nominated in the same category, Rugby Channel's Etched in Black series which featured great
All Black icons, produced by Mike Brown and Andrea McVeigh.
SKY's Director of Sport, Kevin Cameron, accepted the award on the night.
"This is reward for the sterling efforts of SKY's production crews who collectively produce over 200 outside broadcast
sports events each year", he said.
"We always push for consistency in delivering a quality product, and it is to the credit of the rugby production unit
that this was maintained throughout the year", said Kevin Cameron.
"Special mention should be made of the key players - NPC producer Richard Mason and his two main directors, Gavin
Service and Francis Porterfield, for their significant contributions."
Forthcoming sporting events to be broadcast exclusively live on SKY Sport and the Rugby Channel include the All Blacks'
international season against England, France and Wales in June, the Tri-Series against Australia and South Africa in
July/August and also the 2003 NPC which kicks-off in August.
