Pfizer Animal Health Strengthens Local Market
Pfizer Animal Health has been significantly strengthened by Pfizer Inc’s global acquisition of Pharmacia Corporation, completed on April 16th 2003. The New Zealand division of Pfizer Animal Health is pleased to announce this development, and looks forward to building on its offering to the local market.
Pfizer Animal Health Division Director, Craig Patterson says the acquisition is an exciting opportunity for the Animal Health business.
“Pharmacia's livestock and companion animal customers can look forward to benefiting from Pfizer’s commitment to technical support and ongoing local field force investment. Many of the changes that will take place in the coming months offer exciting new opportunities to the valued customers of both organisations. Internationally, Pfizer is the leader in animal health research and development and invests millions in maximising scientific and technological expertise. The acquisition means product innovation and investment will be strengthened internationally with the benefits ultimately flowing through to New Zealand.”
Changes to the Pharmacia/Pfizer Animal Health team include an expansion of the field force to include a new pastoral team whose role is to focus on meeting the needs of farmers, while supporting Pfizer’s vet-only Dectomax distribution strategy. This new team will be complementary to the existing companion animal, and vet ethical teams.
These changes will be phased in over the next 2 months, meaning for all Pfizer Animal Health and Pharmacia customers it is business as usual.
Says Craig; “The field force will soon be talking to veterinarians, and their key farmer contacts explaining the changes, providing additional information and working closely to ensure a smooth transition period.”
The acquisition means Pfizer Animal Health globally will divest itself of the Cue-Mate product due to the requirements of competition law regulators in Australia and New Zealand. In Cidr we have an excellent market leading product which provides Pfizer with the ability to develop and grow the reproductive market. Cue-Mate will still be available to veterinary practices pending completion of the divestment, and the divestment of Pfizer’s Cue-Mate business will not take place until an appropriate buyer is located. We would anticipate that this would take some months to complete.
Pfizer Animal Health in New Zealand is recognised as a leader in the livestock and companion animal pharmaceutical markets, with many innovative products meeting the needs of livestock and pets in the local market. Internationally, Pfizer treats every major animal species in over 140 countries.
