Call for electricity savings leadership from public sector
Heather Staley Chief Executive of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has asked the public sector to
lead the way in making electricity savings this winter.
In a letter to the chief executives of government agencies, Ms Staley says it is entirely reasonable for public sector
organisations to make 10% electricity savings in April without significantly impacting on operational effectiveness.
"With households and businesses being asked to achieve 5% savings in April, the public sector should lead the way and
exceed the target expected of others," says Ms Staley.
Ms Staley says the need for immediate savings is also an opportunity for public sector organisations to put in place
energy efficiency measures that will reduce the taxpayers' future energy bill.
"The Department of Correction's has just committed to improving energy efficiency and cutting their energy bill by $1
million in five years. We want more public sector agencies making these energy efficiency commitments and savings.
"In light of the importance of electricity savings for economic growth, the public sector has a duty to show leadership
in making savings," Ms Staley said.
