Vehicle registrations up for March
Vehicle registrations for March were up nearly six percent on last year, according to figures from the Land Transport
Safety Authority. There were 24,140 first-time registrations of new and used imported vehicles this March, compared with
22,797 in March 2002 - an increase of 5.9 percent.
Total first-time car registrations were up 4.1 percent, from 17,933 in March 2002 to 18,667 last month. While new car
registrations fell by 0.6 percent, from 5,432 to 5,399, used import registrations rose 6.1 percent from 12,501 to
13,268. The market share leader for new car registrations last month was Ford with 20.2 percent, ahead of Holden with
14.7 percent and Toyota with 14.2 percent.
The three most popular new car models for the month were the Ford Falcon, Holden Commodore and Toyota Corolla.
Truck registrations were up 14.9 percent, from 2,417 in March 2002 to 2,778 this year.
Trailer registrations were up 6.3 percent, from 1,562 to 1,661 while motorcycle registrations (over 60cc) jumped 28.2
percent, from 330 to 423.
Tractor registrations fell 18.4 percent, from 196 to 160, while bus registrations dropped from 76 to 73.
