Widespread business shut downs alarming
Business is absolutely dismayed at the spot prices reached by electricity today, says the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern).
"Power prices have risen to between 70 to 80 cents today," said Alasdair Thompson, EMA's chief executive.
"The result is businesses from the aluminium smelter at Bluff to Carter Holt forestry based plants in the north are shutting down production.
"Business can't work like this.
"We urge Government to begin listening to the concerns, and solutions that business has been putting before Government minister and officials over many months."
