Winners Of Panpa 2003 Advertising Awards Announced
Outstanding newspaper advertisements were recognised tonight when the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association (PANPA) announced the winners of the 2003 Advertising Awards and the AdNews PANPA Advertising Excellence Awards.
The winners were announced during the PANPA 2003 Advertising Awards Dinner, a gala function held at Star City Hotel, Sydney, and attended by more than 120 people.
Close to 250 entries from Australia and New Zealand were submitted in the 2003 Advertising Awards. The judges were Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA) general manager Catherine Aronsten, Creative Sales and Marketing Services principal Roger Gorrel and former PANPA CEO Brett Kenworthy.
Australian winners of the awards included The Australian, The Advocate at Burnie, The Examiner at Launceston (two awards) and The Border Mail, Albury-Wodonga (two awards).
New Zealand’s Marlborough Express, Blenheim, took out four awards in its circulation category. Other winners from New Zealand included The Dominion Post, Wellington, Country-Wide, Feilding, and The Press, Christchurch.
New this year were the Power of Newspapers Awards, introduced to acknowledge what newspapers are doing to use the medium as a way of responding quickly to news situations (Best Tactical Advertisement) and also what newspapers are doing to promote newspapers as a medium (Best Promotion of Newspapers as a Medium).
The AdNews PANPA Advertising Excellence Awards recognising excellence in newspaper advertising professionals were also new this year, designed to reward the individual talent that exists within newspaper advertising throughout the region and which is not often acknowledged within the industry.
The PANPA 2003 Advertising Awards Dinner was held in conjunction with the two-day PANPA 2003 Advertising Forum. More than 110 people are attending the event from March 3-4 at Star City Hotel. Speakers over the two days include Australia Street Consulting managing director Professor Bob Miller, Zenith Media CEO Anne Parsons, ASTECH InterMedia, US, president Tom Ratkovich, Kate Scott of Kate Scott Consulting, Pace Australia managing director Paul Archer, Fusion Strategy managing director Steve Allen and Ray White Real Estate group chief auctioneer Tony Fountain.
PANPA runs the prestigious Newspaper of the Year Awards in conjunction with the PANPA Annual Conference. The PANPA 34th Annual Conference and PANEXPO will be held at the Brisbane Convention Centre from August 4-6 this year.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS ON AWARD WINNERS
John V Sellars Awards. Mono. Circulation: Under 15,000 Winner: The Marlborough Express, New Zealand for “We deliver every day” The judges said: “The production and execution were excellent. Taken a traditional format and used compelling and well-crafted copy and ‘tactile’ photography to draw the reader in. Takes the idea of ‘local’ and ‘human interest’ as close as it gets – reinforcing the care relevance of the paper as a valued member of the community.”
John V Sellars Awards. Mono. Circulation: 15,000-50,000 Winner: The Examiner, Launceston for “Fuel Costs”. The judges said: “Very good use of space and typography, excellent copy. Very good call to action, elicits trust and agreement, building positive relationship from first contact. Well done! Sensational headline, excellent linkage to target market. Who has seen a mechanics ad like this recently?”
John V Sellars Awards. Effective Use of Colour. Under 15,000 Winner: The Marlborough Express for “When only the best will do” The judges said: “Very interesting use of colour illustrations that tell the story without copy. Drawing readers’ eyes across the page to a simple and effective call to action. Owns the page by smart use of shape and format, may not have worked in a different shaped ad. Goes against the rule of maximising contrast. Identifies the products with the soft gentle effect of a NZ garden.”
John V Sellars Awards. Effective Use of Colour. 15,000-50,000 Winner: The Border Mail, Victoria, for “The Tap Doctor” The judges said: “The winner has fantastic, smart and witty execution that gets the message across brilliantly. Really stands out in any decision. Clever use of humour to draw attention to an otherwise mundane subject matter. Excellent, clever, creative and communicates the message clearly.”
John V Sellars Awards. Effective Use of Colour. Over 50,000 Winner: The Dominion Post, NZ, for ”Get ready for summer”. The judges said: “Long way to second! Four basic colours and mono type used effectively to highlight product, no overkill, brilliant product positioning, effective headlines and copy, clear and crisp heading to overcome busy placement.”
John V Sellars Awards. Best Advertising Feature or Supplement Under 15,000 Winner: The Marlborough Express, NZ. for “A Taste of Wine”. The judges said: “Crisp, clean layout and illustration with good editorial and advertising balance, selective and effective use of colour clearly elicits intended properties. Well presented and effective headline/copy, finessed excellent finishing touches.”
John V Sellars Awards. Best Advertising Feature or Supplement. 15,000-50,000 Winner: The Examiner, Launceston for “Tasmania 1802” The judges said: “An overwhelmingly comprehensive and well-crafted supplement, 124 pages of clear winner. Elicits an exceptional response by attaching the Examiner’s brand with the heritage of Tasmania. The wealth of copy and imagery to gorge on and to be kept. And it’s on newsprint. These people clearly are willing to make the investment in time and thinking to produce an outstanding end product.”
John V Sellars Awards. Best Advertising Feature or Supplement. Over 50,000 Winner: Country-Wide, Feilding, NZ for “Heartland Beef” The judges said: “Very well presented, comprehensive treatment of the subject matter. Exceptionally well targeted with good use of layout, colour, type and copy to create a complete package.” One judge said: “A no bull publication.”
John V Sellars Awards. Best Campaign. Under 15,000 Winner: The Marlborough Express for “Wild about Technology” The judges said: “The images tell the story, an overwhelmingly successful use of colour, illustration, copy and layout coming together to present effective and appropriate communication of the proposition message.”
John V Sellars Awards. Best Campaign. 15,000-50,000 Winner: The Border Mail, Victoria, for “Your Local Baker” The judges said: “A fantastic translation of corporate tvc to print – excellent design, art direction, styling and copy coming together to provide and exceptional platform for the client. A brilliant effort. The creator needs to be applauded for highlighting how newspapers can beat other mediums at their own game”
John V Sellars Awards. Best Campaign. Over 50,000 Winner: The Press, NZ, for “Stonewood Homes” The judges said: “Crisp, clean communication drives design concepts following an identifiable visual theme. Strong branding, well balanced copy component.”
Power of Newspapers Awards. Best Tactical Advertisement. Under 50,000 Winner: The Examiner, Launceston for “Winter Olympics” The judges said: “Takes advantage of the event of the Winter Olympics using humour and good use of colour, layout and design to offer an alternative entertainment option. Strong branding.”
Power of Newspapers Awards. Best Promotion of Newspapers as a Medium. Over 50,000 Winner: The Australian for “Influencing the Affluent” The judges said: “A campaign with great depth demonstrating the power of The Australian as a leading advertising medium to a defined target market. Stylish, well pitched, the trade press campaign was supported by a strong and influential Powerpoint presentation focusing on and profiling the relevant audiences. Strong supporting data communicated clearly helping make this well designed and superb layout the ultimate marketing tool.”
Outstanding Classified Advertising Sales Executive Winner: Martin Radford, Account Manager, Sydney Morning Herald & Sun Herald The judges said: “This category received many worthy nominations that made selecting the recipient difficult. However, the clearly outstanding performer, though as one judge put it ‘at a short half head in front’ had demonstrated a strong ability to identify client needs and wants, successfully build strong relationships, promoted the Sydney Morning Herald and Sun-Herald as a business partner, not just an advertising medium and achieved outstanding performance in total personal revenue generation.”
Outstanding Display Advertising Sales Executive Winner: Helena Gane, New Business Executive, New Zealand Herald The judges said: “The entries in this category by and large display that there is a wealth of creative and energetic talent who are willing and able to put the client first and generate significant improvements to the bottom line. But if performance against personal revenue targets is any indicator of excellence then Helena Gane’s 66 per cent over target performance (almost $1 million) is a sure sign. It is often a cliché when it is said that it was difficult to call, but in this instance it truly was and the judges want to mention that the division between the top nominees was indeed difficult to discern.”
Excellence in Advertising Sales Management Winner: Steve Whitmore, Advertising Sales Manager, The Marlborough Express The judges said: “There is little doubt that the recipient of the inaugural Excellence in Advertising Sales Management award is keenly qualified. His excellence in a number of fields highlights it. He is the winner of numerous national and international awards displaying a keen knowledge of what makes good newspaper advertising. He also impressed due to strategic restructuring of the department resulting in customer focused teams with significant revenue increases and the demonstration of strong leadership qualities and outstanding performance with overall revenue growth and new business development.”
