Fonterra comment on WTO result
The victory for New Zealand and the USA in the WTO Canada export subsidies case is important for international dairy trade, says Fonterra Chief Executive Craig Norgate.
New Zealand and the USA claimed that Canada had attempted to evade the WTO export subsidy disciplines agreed in the Uruguay Round in 1995.
“The win confirms the view that Canada must keep its subsidised exports to the strict limits set out in the Uruguay round,” says Mr Norgate.
“The decision by the WTO Appellate Body is also a clear signal to other subsidised exporters that the WTO controls are not to be exceeded.
“Fonterra would like to thank the Minister and his officials for their persistence and skill in pursuing this case,” he says.
