Kyoto Ratification supported by wind energy industry
The wind energy industry applauded the Government's ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. "This first, but very welcome step was essential to help move New Zealand toward a more sustainable energy future" said Alistair Wilson, chairman of the New Zealand Wind Energy Association.
"But it is only the first step, and a much higher level of commitment and action will be required to make sure New Zealand benefits from this move" he said. "We strongly support the sentiments on the need to move New Zealand toward more sustainable sources of energy, as expressed by the Prime Minister and Minister of Energy at the ratification ceremony.
"But the wind energy industry really wants to see the sentiments backed by actions which will demonstrate real understanding about the choices we face.
"In particular, we would like to see Government leadership on the barriers to the uptake of wind such as Distribution Company pricing, the Resource Management Act and access to the international price for carbon" concluded Mr Wilson.
