Carter Holt Harvey leads way towards joint export entity
Carter Holt Harvey (CHH) is taking an active role in leading the forestry industry by seeking to create a more co-ordinated approach to export marketing.
The company has announced today that it is in exclusive discussions with the CNIFP Receiver, Ferrier Hodgson, on the creation of an independent log export entity. CHH and CNIFP would be the founding shareholders, with the intention of inviting other industry participants to become involved.
CEO Chris Liddell said the company is pleased to be taking the first real steps to develop a better approach to how the industry exports.
“To compete successfully internationally we need to be world class in everything we do - from the production of high value products through to the export of logs. We’re delighted to be in discussions with the Receiver on the joint opportunities associated with exporting,” said Mr Liddell.
Devon McLean, Chief Operating Officer for Carter Holt Harvey, has led discussions.
“We have a diverse and vibrant forestry industry in New Zealand, made up of many different participants. The industry should preserve this diversity of approach where it makes sense and work together where there is benefit.”
“We believe there are considerable benefits for customers and the New Zealand forest industry by taking a more co-ordinated approach to the way we export logs. Once the entity is established, we would look for further industry participation in joint export. An approach has already been made to Fletcher Forests.”
“While these are early days, the discussions have the potential of being a major step forward for the industry in New Zealand”, said Mr McLean.
