New Zealand Official Yearbook 2002 Launched
The 103rd edition of the New Zealand Official Yearbook is to be launched this evening by the Minister of Statistics, Hon
John Tamihere, at Massey University, Wellington. Also present will be guest speaker Scott Houston, Chief Technical
Officer, Weta Digital, whose team produced the visual effects for 'The Lord of the Rings' film trilogy.
The Yearbook, believed to be New Zealand's longest running publication, is published jointly by Statistics New Zealand
and David Bateman Ltd.
The 2002 edition carries an information technology theme and contains a wide range of articles, graphs, tables and
photographs reflecting the impact of new technology on all aspects of New Zealand life. The 2002 edition also features a
special colour section highlighting technology in the arts. Of particular interest in the colour section are scenes from
'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' depicted in a Maximum Cards range of stamps produced by New Zealand
Post.
The Yearbook continues to be an authoritative source of statistical facts and figures about New Zealand public life,
covering such topics as the national economy, justice and law, arts and cultural heritage, and education.
Government Statistician Brian Pink sees this Yearbook as "particularly special in the way it documents the tremendous
growth and convergence of information and communications technologies that permeate all aspects of New Zealand society.
