The trend series for the number of new dwellings has been increasing since November 2000, according to Statistics New
Zealand. Consents were issued for 2,420 new dwelling units in September 2002.
Consents for 485 new apartments were issued in September 2002 compared with 232 in August and 686 in July 2002. The five
largest consents for new apartment units contributed 62 percent of the total number of new apartment units for September
2002. For the year ended September 2002, the average number of new apartment units was about 300 per month; this
compares with an average number of about 195 per month for the year ended September 2001.
The total value of non-residential building consents issued in September 2002 was $279 million.
Consents issued for hospitals, nursing homes and other health buildings were worth $74 million, 27 percent of the
non-residential buildings total. Consents for offices and administration buildings contributed $43 million or 16
percent.
The total value of consents issued for all buildings in September 2002 was $738 million.
Residential buildings contributed 62 percent of the total for all buildings in September 2002, compared with 53 percent
for September 2001. For the year ended September 2002, the total value of consents for all buildings was $7,516 million,
up $1,138 million or 18 percent when compared with the year ended September 2001.
