Climate Change Government/Forest Industry Collaboration
The forest industry welcomes the Government’s clear recognition of the role of forest sinks in assisting New Zealand to meet its Kyoto Protocol obligations.
This was stated today by Mr Devon McLean, Chairman of the Forest Industries Council, in response to the Government’s statement on the dialogue between the Government and the forest industry in developing an agreement on a “Forestry Framework”.
“We are pleased with progress to date but obviously wish to see the details before signing off on any framework agreement.”
As the Minister stated, the forest industry is making a very significant contribution to New Zealand meeting its carbon emission targets during the first commitment period.
Mr McLean said, “The forest industry is very much a part of the solution to climate change concerns given the role it plays in sequestering greenhouse gases in the growing trees. We are pleased, therefore, that in recognition of the sink contribution, the Government and the industry are working together on a number of initiatives including investment in bio-energy research and generation for use in the wood processing and possibly other industrial processes.”
“This industry is poised to make a major contribution to the economic growth of New Zealand, particularly in the regions. To be able to generate jobs, new products and export earnings in a way that enhances our ability to meet New Zealand’s international obligations is particularly beneficial to the country.
“The industry and government have been engaged in the Wood Processing Strategy Partnership for the past two years. This consensus in respect of climate change is yet another example of the value of the two parties working constructively to achieve common goals,” concluded Mr McLean.
