Coca-Cola Amatil receives Corporate Environmental Award
Beverage manufacturer, Coca-Cola Amatil NZ (CCANZ) is one of five companies to receive an Unlimited/Massey University
Corporate Environmental Award from Prime Minister Helen Clark.
The Awards were made at parliamentary function in Wellington last night and are a result of a survey of the
environmental responsiveness of New Zealand’s top 200 companies. CCANZ’s ranking in this survey improved from 16th place
last year to 2nd in 2002.
Achieving ISO certification, the measured reduction of solid waste, wastewater and the establishment of the local
beverage industry’s first closed-loop recycling are among the company’s most recent environmental developments.
CCANZ Managing Director, David Westall, believes that employee ownership of environmental programmes is vital to their
success.
“We’re so pleased that our company-wide contribution to environmental programmes has been recognized. We still have a
great deal to do, but believe CCANZ is well placed to continue our sustainable development philosophy,” Mr Westall said.
In the last year, the company has undertaken several environmental initiatives:
- ISO 14001 certification of all three of the company’s plants (Auckland, Putaruru and Christchurch).
- Annual reduction in the quantity of solid waste disposed of at the Christchurch plant since 1997.
- A 15% reduction in the amount of wastewater created by the Auckland plant.
- The introduction of a closed-loop “bottle to bottle’ recycling process which has ensured all 390ml, 600ml, 1.5Litre
and 2.25Litre bottles manufactured in New Zealand contain 25% recycled material.
- 90% of operational staff receiving environmental awareness training over the last year.
“CCANZ recognizes its responsibility to the New Zealand environment and our community. This is why we are striving to
continuously improve our environmental management system,” said Mr Westall.
