Telecom Enters Global Data Alliances
Telecom has entered into three separate global alliance agreements that will allow it to boost global data traffic and
explore new possibilities with broadband technologies.
The company has signed separate agreements with Verizon, NTT Communications (NTT Com) and Cable & Wireless (C & W).
Telecom will terminate data traffic for Verizon, NTT Com and C & W in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands and the three companies will terminate Telecom’s data traffic in
their respective regions: Verizon in the United States, NTT Com in Asia, and C & W to the rest of the world.
Telecom’s General Manager International, Anthony Briscoe, said the alliances enabled Telecom to work with these leading
telecommunications companies to provide its customers with end-to-end service around the world.
“The alliances give us competitive reach to New Zealand’s major trading communities in the United States, Asia and
Europe. Verizon, NTT Com and C & W are all great relationships for us as they have wide coverage, strong retail bases and good products and services in
their respective regions.
“The alliances also give us access to the expertise of these leading telecommunications companies enabling us, for
example, to improve our understanding of how we can better take advantage of broadband technologies. We’ll be able to
keep a close eye on developments in their home markets and look to migrate emerging technology advances back to New
Zealand.”
Telecom’s international data traffic will flow over the Australasian and Southern Cross cables. This will enable Telecom
to leverage its shareholding in Southern Cross and the other cable systems that Telecom has an interest in.
Mr Briscoe said Telecom’s Network International team had entered into these alliance agreements on the basis that all
parties were leading telecommunications companies in their respective regions, and Telecom had complementary services
and interests with each of these companies.
