Market First for Wellington Drive
Wellington Drive Technologies (NZSE:WDT) today announced two new development orders for proof-of-concept motors.
Separate divisions of a large manufacturer of domestic appliances have placed the orders.
“The customer company is moving two product lines up market and the ultra quiet Wellington Motors are believed to offer
them the ability to target premium segments,” said Wellington Drive managing director, Dr Ross Green.
“The company produces a large number of units per year of one of the product lines we’re working with. The second line
also runs a substantial number. The customer hopes Wellington motors will help them increase volumes, particularly in
their component business.”
Green said that the development orders covered construction of samples for proof-of-principle tests.
“Over recent months analysis and simulation work has been carried out by our team and the customer’s engineers. We’re
working well together and our motors appear to be a good fit with their needs.”
He noted that the programmes were still at an early stage, but said that the development orders were hoped to lead to
motor production under licence in due course. Wellington’s recently announced CE certification for the DE066 motor and
CH070 controller had assisted the decision process.
“We first met in March this year and we’re pleased to see business, albeit on a small scale at this stage, from a
customer like this so promptly. It’s also pleasing to get a foothold in a new area of the appliance market.”
Made from specialised plastics, permanent magnets and electronics, Wellington Drive’s brushless motor design offers
lower noise and longer life than conventional approaches. It also requires less than half the energy to run and can be
made in virtually any shape.
Wellington Drive has agreed a non-disclosure arrangement with the customer company.
