FFNZ Unaware of Working Dog Problems
Federated Farmers is unaware of any problems relating to the welfare of farm dogs, says Federated Farmer's Vice
President Charlie Pedersen.
"The Federation is concerned about the welfare of all farm animals," said Mr Pedersen. "As such the Federation has an
understanding with both the Ministry of Agriculture and the SPCA that they will come to us if they have concerns about
animal welfare on farm."
"The Federation has regular contact with the SPCA and recently attended their AGM as we have done in previous years. The
SPCA has not raised any concerns with the Federation about the condition of farm dogs.
"Farmer's recognise comments from foreign homestay guests about the condition of farm animals is one of the challenges
of bringing urban dwellers into their farming system.
"Veterinarians around the world are aware of the increasing problem of obesity in companion animals as it is in humans.
A working dog is a finely tuned athlete comparable to a marathon runner.
"All farmers know that a healthy dog makes a willing worker. The SPCA is welcome to come to the Federation with any
concerns and they will be acted upon."
