CALL FOR ENTRIES TO THE BUSINESS ETHICS AWARDS
The Business Ethics Awards recognise companies with a responsible approach to business ethics and the triple bottom line
of economic, social and environmental wealth creation that underpins sustainable development.
The Award is part of the Deloitte Management Top 200 Awards, sponsored by Brookfields Lawyers and assisted by Rodger
Spiller and the New Zealand Centre for Business Ethics and Sustainable Development (NZCBESD). The NZCBESD was initiated
by Auckland University of Technology (AUT), and is supported by AUT, The University of Auckland, Manukau Institute of
Technology and the private sector.
Finalists are recognised at the annual Top 200 awards ceremony in November, profiled in Management Magazine and used as
case studies for education and training.
NZBCSD member 3M won the inaugural award in 1999. Finalists have included NZBCSD members Shell New Zealand, Vodafone and
Fletcher Challenge.
By entering the Awards, your business demonstrates a willingness to share your learning and assist other companies to
contribute to sustainable development.

CLEAN AIR & ENVIRONMENT CONFERENCE
The New Zealand Branch of the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand are very pleased to announce that the 16th

ACCOUNTING TRANSPARENCY WINS ICANZ RECOGNITION
Congratulations to Raechel Cummins - the NZBCSD liaison delegate from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Raechel is PwC's
senior manager of Sustainability Solutions and won runner up in the ICANZ Central Region Young Accountant of the Year.
The winner was Steve Leith from Treasury.
Interestingly, both Raechel and Steve work in the area of accounting transparency - improving the transarency and
understanding of the information that organisations provide to their stakeholders. This is certainly an area of growing
importance and one that aligns with NZBCSD principles.

CYCLING SUPPORT NZ INC. ENCOURAGE BUSINESSES TO PROMOTE CYCLING
Cycling Support NZ Incorporated seek your support to think laterally and sustainably about transportation and encourage
all businesses to think about what they can do to improve the transport situation.
Examples of things to think about are:
* Are our employees encouraged to cycle to work?
* What provisions can be made for cyclists at my work-place?
* Do we provide alternatives to company cars in our remuneration packages?
* How can we encourage our clients to walk or cycle? * Do we encourage responsible driving? * Have we considered the
effects of our transport operations on the environment and on other (more vulnerable) road users?

BOSTON BUSES BUSTED FOR IDLING
The latest edition of the ICANZ "News and Views" newsletter included this excellent example of how unthinking customs
and practices can act as an enemy to sustainable development.
"A Notice of Violation has been issued to the Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority for excessive idling discovered
during inspections at four bus yards. The inspections, found numerous instances of buses idling in violation of the
state's five minute limit. Many were idling for more than an hour and, in one instance for two hours and 30 minutes!"

TIPU AKE - A LEADERSHIP MODEL FOR INNOVATIVE ORGANISATIONS
Tipu Ake ki te Ora (Growing from within ever upwards towards wellbeing) is a leadership model inspired by the self
transformation of Te Whaiti School. Here a small unemployed Maori community took its future in its own hands, and used
its ancient wisdom and methods to do some remarkable things against all the odds. A group of volunteers from AUT and
elsewhere has helped them capture their unique processes as the Tipu Ake Lifecycle. Many student projects at AUT and
elsewhere are now helping them share it with the world.
Tipu Ake has been developed entirely by groundswell volunteer energy, has no political or corporate connections, so
relies on personal networking, word of mouth and partnerships. It is thus a charitable international knowledge economy
movement centred in the middle of NZ's bush, based on some ancient values and methods, largely unconstrained by current
boundaries or convention.
