Vehicle registrations up in May
May vehicle registration figures released today by the Land Transport Safety Authority show a 5.1 percent increase from the same month last year and a 7.5 percent rise on April this year.
There were 21,588 first-time registrations of new and used imported vehicles this May, compared with 20,532 in May 2001 and 20,085 in April this year.
First-time car registrations rose from 16,419 in May 2001 to 16,641 this May (15,777 in April). New car registrations were up 12.5 percent, from 4,466 in May 2001 to 5,025 this May (4,735 in April), while used import registrations fell 2.8 percent, from 11,953 in May 2001 to 11,616 this May (11,042 in April).
The market share leader for new car registrations last month was Toyota with 18.0 percent, ahead of Ford with 16.3 percent and Holden with 15.2 percent. Holden continues to hold the overall market share lead for new cars registered in the year to date.
The three most popular new car models for the month were the Holden VX Commodore, Ford Falcon and Toyota Camry.
Truck registrations were up 33 percent, from 1,949 in May 2001 to 2,588 this May. Motorcycle registrations (over 60cc) were up from 245 to 308, while trailer registrations were down by just one, from 1,460 to 1,459. Tractor registrations rose from 161 to 207, while bus registrations were up from 64 to 95.
