Scenic Circle Hotels Golf Classic – new trophy announced
New trophy added to prize giving at Chisholm Links
Scenic Circle Hotels, naming sponsor of the Scenic Circle Hotels Golf Classic that opens in Dunedin on Wednesday, is adding a new trophy to the tournament.
The Scenic Circle Hotels Trophy will be awarded to the top amateur in the competition.
Event Director Mike Greenslade says the amateur trophy completes the prize giving line-up for the event that is now a full Order of Merit Tournament on the Australasian PGA Tour. “We’re really pleased that Scenic Circle Hotels is recognising the efforts of the amateurs who are invited to play in this tournament. Introducing the amateur trophy is a great innovation for the tournament.”
Earl Hagaman, Chairman of Scenic Circle Hotels, says the company is delighted to offer the trophy. “We’re very supportive of this event, and equally so of the further development of golf in New Zealand. We’ll be watching with interest to see how the promising local amateurs perform among the 140 professionals they’ll be up against next week.”
Details on the new trophy will be backdated to feature last year’s winning amateur, Otago’s Brett McEwan. McEwan is back in the tournament this year, joined by three other Otago amateurs from the Otago inter-provincial team. Bruce Grant, Chris Idour and Michael Smith will all be vying for their name to be next on the trophy.
Mr Hagaman will present the trophy to the winning amateur at the prize giving next Sunday.
Scenic Circle Hotels owns Dunedin’s oldest and largest hotel, the Southern Cross, which will be hosting the core team of tournament management, media and several players.
A few days out from the start of the tournament, Southern Cross Hotel manager Nicola Arney says accommodation is tight across the whole city. “With 144 golfers, and thousands of supporters and spectators, this event is going to benefit Dunedin right across the board. The Scenic Circle Hotels Golf Classic is the biggest golf event that Dunedin has seen since the 1970’s. Dunedin is always passionate about sport and hospitality, and we’re certainly excited to be close to the action. We’re especially looking forward to welcoming last year’s winner, David Podlich, back to Dunedin.”
Scenic Circle Hotels will continue supporting the tournament in 2003.
