Retail Trade Survey: January 2002
Seasonally adjusted retail sales increased 0.5 percent in January 2002, compared with December 2001, according to
Statistics New Zealand. The core retailing group (which excludes the motor vehicle services and retailing storetypes)
increased 0.9 percent over the same period.
The retail sales trend remains positive. The average rate of increase in sales has been 0.5 percent a month since the
last turning point in May 1998.
Eleven of the 15 storetypes had increases in seasonally adjusted sales this month. The largest upwards contributors were
the food retailing and recreational goods storetypes. These were partly offset by decreases in the motor vehicle
retailing and other stores storetypes.
