Published: Wed 6 Mar 2002 09:19 AM
Te Putahi Paoho, the Mäori Electoral College, has announced the appointment of Ani Waaka to the board of the Maori Television Service, replacing former board member Joanna Paul.
Ms Waaka is one of four Mäori Television directors that are appointed by Te Putahi Paoho. The other three directors appointed by the College are Whaimutu Dewes, Craig Soper and Martin Cleave. The three Crown-appointed directors are chairman Derek Fox, Wayne Brown and Wena Tait.
Chairperson Hone Harawira said Ms Waaka brings to the Board a thorough background in the public service, considerable experience in governance matters, and strong community credentials.
“Ani also brings a background knowledge of the historical development of the Maori Television proposal, through her involvement with the former Mäori television group Te Awhiorangi over the past couple of years. She has maintained her interest in the Mäori television sector and is familiar with most of those involved in the Mäori television field.”
“Te Putahi Paoho is confident that Ms Waaka will be able to play a full part in decision-making as soon as she arrives at the boardroom table. We believe that Ani has the skills, the conscience, and the commitment to add value to the development of the Maori Television Service.”
The chairman of Te Putahi Paoho Hone Harawira also commented on the dual accountability model that has been used to establish the Maori TV service, noting that it was a completely new model and that there were still issues to work through.
“The fact is that we, the Electoral College and the Government, are breaking new ground here. Great ideas need to be turned in action and that is not always easy when working with government agencies. However I am hopeful that we can work through the details to achieve the outcomes for both Maori and the Crown.”
