Will 'The Guy Who Does The Lotto' Prop Up Kiwibank?
"Kiwibank should not rely on low wages, sub-standard security and poor conditions," said Don Farr, general secretary of
Finsec, the union for bank workers.
"This is a bank started with tax payers' money by a Labour/Alliance Government. The Government cannot expect to maintain
credibility with our members if it sanctions the undermining of their pay, security standards and conditions of work.
"Many Kiwibank employees will be employed, not by NZ Post, but by franchise holders in premises with inadequate
security, where wages and conditions do not meet industry standards. The 'guy who does the Lotto' will also serve bank
customers.
"There are glaring contradictions here. A bank set up for low income people is about to perpetuate low incomes and
unsafe, sub-standard conditions among its workers. Workers have paid for the bank once through taxes and will now
subsidise its operations.
"We are concerned about this, and we are also deeply concerned at the implications of these low wages and standards on
the state of the industry as a whole."
