After only six months in operation Telecom’s 027 network has hooked up 100,000 027 mobile phone customers.
Telecom Mobile has more than 1.3 Million mobile customers. It launched mobile services in 1987 and it took six years to achieve the first 100,000 connections. Now more than one in two New Zealanders have mobile phones.
Half of the connections to the 027 network, using CDMA technology, are upgrades of existing Telecom Mobile customers, the other half are new customers.
CDMA (code division multiple access) is an advanced mobile phone technology with the ability to deliver sophisticated mobile products and services to Telecom customers. It provides landline-like voice quality; an ability to connect to the Internet and view specially formatted web pages (WAP - wireless application protocol), international roaming. It also provides high level security and data speeds.
Telecom’s 027 customers can send and receive emails, access the latest news and weather, a wealth of information, entertainment and games, and even do banking transactions using their mobile phones.
CDMA technology will provide a transition path to third generation services such as full Internet access, M-Commerce, file transfer, video and interactive entertainment.
