Building Consents Issued: December 2001
Value of New Dwellings Continues to Grow
Building consents were issued in December 2001 for 1,497 new dwelling units, worth $306.2 million, according to
Statistics New Zealand. This follows the authorisation of 2,148 new dwelling units, valued at $298.4 million, in
November 2001. The high value for December 2001 is partly the result of continuing work on large staged projects.
The trend in the number of new dwellings has been increasing by more than 1.0 percent per month since January 2001.
The number of new dwelling units was higher in 13 of the 16 regions for December 2001, when compared with December 2000.
The total value of non-residential building consents issued in December 2001 was $200.7 million. Consents issued for
education buildings comprised $55.4 million, 27.6 percent of the total. This is the highest value for education
buildings since December 1998, when it was $60.0 million.
The total value of all building consents issued in December 2001 was $563.0 million.
