Telecom Boosts Mobile Phone Services To Prepare For Holiday Demand
Telecom is boosting mobile capacity in over 15 holiday towns to prepare for fluctuating demand over the later summer months.
Telecom Mobile’s Transportables and Events Manager, Mike Marsden, says Telecom regularly increases capacity in areas where populations swell over the holidays.
"We'll also be boosting capacity for special events, such as one-day cricket matches and Tiger Woods’ appearance at the New Zealand Golf Open," he said.
Mobile services are boosted using transportable mobile phone sites and by temporarily installing extra capacity into existing sites.
Two transportable sites are up and running in Paraparaumu to boost services during the New Zealand Golf Open and for holiday-makers.
Three transportable sites have also been installed in the Coromandel. A fourth transportable will operate on Great Barrier Island until permanent facilities are built.
Holiday towns such as Nelson, Motueka, Queenstown and Wanaka also have extra capacity installed into existing mobile phone sites, to handle higher than normal traffic.
Other events that will benefit from more mobile capacity include the big race meetings in Auckland and Wellington, gatherings such as the Parachute Christian music festival near Hamilton, the Volvo Ocean Race at the Auckland Viaduct, Telecom Sevens rugby games, and the Martinborough fair.
