For Auckland based Hynds Pipe Systems Limited marks a new era and the opportunity for growth in the South Island following its acquisition of well-known Christchurch based company, M.J.McKendry Ltd, and its subsidiary McKendry Products Ltd, in Amberley.
Established in Auckland in 1973 by John and Leonie Hynds, Hynds Pipe Systems Ltd today employs over 300 people with 11 sales outlets throughout the North Island and manufacturing facilities in East Tamaki, Hamilton, Te Kuiti, Tauranga and Palmerston North.
In 1999 Hynds won the Business of The Year Award at the Westpac Trust Manukau Business Excellence Awards and John Hynds won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Today, the once small family business enjoys the respect of engineers and buyers from New Zealand’s leading contractors. Both of John Hynds sons, Adrian and Aaron are involved in the business.
Announcing the acquisition, Hynds Managing Director, Adrian Hynds, said the opportunity to purchase M J McKendry provided an excellent opportunity for Hynds to develop the South Island market.
“We are delighted to be able to incorporate the M.J.McKendry operations into the Hynds family. We will be able to expand our services to the rural, and civil drainage sectors and provide our customers with the additional knowledge and expertise associated with the McKendry business.”
“Our vision is to supply excellent drainage and associated products nation-wide and McKendry’s interests in the rural sector, providing troughs and water tanks as well as precast wall panels, beams, flooring units and power poles will complement our own product range”.
Established in 1944 by Maurice McKendry, the company has numerous notable achievements to its credit, including the precast beams in the Clarendon Towers and the Park Royal Hotel, Christchurch; providing the Jade Stadium in Christchurch with pre-cast concrete bleachers, and stairs.
Tony McKendry, also a son of the founder, Maurice McKendry and one of the company’s three directors said the company was delighted to be placing the firm into another family based company with similar family values and drive.
However, the McKendry connection will not be completely severed as a son of Tony McKendry, a former director, John McKendry, is currently Foreman of the Christchurch factory.
Greg Neill has been appointed manager of the plant with Mike Harrison, Regional South Island Sales Manager and Simon Tucker, Sales Centre Manager, based in Christchurch.
