The new electricity arrangements being developed by the Electricity Governance Establishment Committee (EGEC) have now
been submitted to the Commerce Commission for authorisation.
David Caygill, chair of the committee said, “the submission of the application to the Commerce Commission is a
significant milestone.”
“The Government’s policy statement of last December asked the industry to work towards a combined set of arrangements
which would deliver electricity in an efficient, fair, reliable and environmentally sustainable manner to all classes of
consumers. The new arrangements seek to achieve that. They will cover the retail electricity market, the wholesale
electricity market, common quality and aspects of transmission.”
“Reaching this stage has been possible because of the considerable input provided by members of the industry, consumer
groups and other interested parties. There is still considerable work before these arrangements can become operational.
The next step will be the issue of a draft determination by the Commerce Commission. At that point the proposed
arrangements will be open for comment by interested parties. The Commission’s final decision is not expected until March
or April next year.”
