Baycorp’s McLaughlin named Executive of the Year; Sky City is Company of the Year.
Baycorp Holdings Ltd managing director Keith McLaughlin has been named as New Zealand’s top business leader for 2001 at
the annual Deloitte/Management magazine Top 200 Awards.
McLaughlin receives the accolade of Executive of the Year for what judges describe as outstanding business performance
and leadership achievements.
Judges, Bill Foster, Alison Paterson and Roger Kerr, considered McLaughlin had demonstrated vision, a strategic
management ability and remarkable people skills to turn a once family-owned debt collection agency into Australasia’s
pre-eminent business services enterprise. They considered McLaughlin’s ability to manage growth and consistently deliver
value and returns to stakeholders made him one of New Zealand’s most accomplished chief executive leaders during 2001.
High-roller entertainment company Sky City Ltd has taken top company performance honours as the Deloitte/Management
magazine Company of the Year.
Judges considered that by international standards, Sky City is one of the best performing and most professionally
managed gaming companies in the world. It delivers what customers want, succeeds in a difficult environment and
maintains high corporate governance standards. In the past 12 months, Sky City has almost doubled revenue, boosted
after-tax profit by 13 percent and has, for the fourth consecutive year, turned in a winning result. Judges considered
that by any measure of commercial performance, Sky City is a top class enterprise.
Film-maker Peter Jackson has been named designworks Visionary Leader for 2001.
He is, in the opinion of judges, a visionary leader, who, even before the release of his latest “Lord of the Rings”
trilogy, has made an outstanding contribution to the world of film and New Zealand’s place in that.
Judges believe that New Zealand’s ability to sell its creativity is as important to its future as any other commercial
enterprise, and Jackson personifies the achievement of combining business and art, and along the way selling New Zealand
as a nation to the world.
The SAP Best Corporate Strategy Award has been won by technology company, Fisher & Paykel. Judges considered this to be one of New Zealand’s truly enduring companies with a strategy to match. In the
past year, its ability to deliver value to shareholders and realise the value embedded in the organisation has shown
through.
Judges considered Fisher & Paykel’s strategy to add value by professionally managing, developing, encouraging and rewarding the people it employs
keeps this
long-established business at the cutting edge of world-class product design, engineering and technological innovation.
Sir Colin Maiden has been named as the QBE Insurance Chairperson of the Year.
Sir Colin continues a long and distinguished career as a professional director and has served as chair of some of New
Zealand’s most prominent corporations. This year, judges acknowledge his outstanding contribution to corporate
governance, the highest standards of commercial direction and his track record for chairmanship with honesty, integrity
and sound commercial judgement.
Bio-technology company, Genesis Corporation has been named as the winner of the Deloitte Emerging Enterprise Award.
Genesis, which successfully listed on the NZ Stock Exchange last year, is considered by judges to have achieved as much
if not more in the specialist area of gene mapping than some of the best-funded U.S. biotechnology companies. In the
event, the company has ensured the integrity of some of New Zealand’s most important agricultural products.
Intellectual capital and science are becoming key trading commodities in the new emerging biotechnology marketplace and
this is forcing the development of new business models necessary for survival. Judges believe Genesis is one of New
Zealand’s most important and exciting emerging enterprises.
Methanex New Zealand has taken out the Brookfields Business Ethics Award in 2001 for its commitment to and practice
leadership in stakeholder dialogue and communication.
Methanex plays an active part in the North Taranaki community in which it operates. On an annual basis, the company
identifies which groups its operations may have an impact on – employees, local residents, government, customers and Iwi
– and puts in place a detailed communications plan for each.
In 1996 communications planning was extended to include a Community Advisory Panel. Comprising 13 representatives from
local stakeholder groups, this Panel meets quarterly with Methanex to bring concerns or queries from the people they
represent. This level of communication has established a high level of trust and understanding between the company and
its communities.
The Deloitte/Management magazine Top 200 Awards are presented annually.
Judges for this year’s Top 200 and Emerging Enterprise Awards were:

for TeNZ;
Alison Paterson, Chair of the District Health Board of New Zealand, Waitemata District Health Board and Landcorp, a
director of the Reserve Bank, Wrightsons and Tower Insurance and a member of the Stock Exchange Market Surveillance
Panel.
Mr Roger Kerr, director and joint shareholder of Asia-Pacific Risk Management Ltd and a corporate advisor on financial
risk and treasury management.

Scientist named New Zealand’s Young Executive of the Year
Richard Templer, a scientist, engineer and team manager with Industrial Research Limited has been named as the NZ
Institute of Management’s 2001 Young Executive of the Year.
Judges for the Award, held in association with the Deloitte/Management magazine Top 200 Awards, considered Templer
exemplified the new breed of brilliant young executive with specialist skills that New Zealand needs to build and
exploit the country’s reputation for innovation, leadership and the ability to harness new technologies.
Judges said Richard Templer demonstrated a remarkable balance of abilities from leadership and commercial acumen to
technical skill and strategic thinking.
They commented that if New Zealand is to join the “knowledge society”, top executives will need the same talents as
those developed by Richard Templer. While the traditional requirements of leadership and business knowledge remain
essential, an in-depth understanding of technology and how to harness it to advantage will take on greater importance if
New Zealand is to remain globally competitive.
Templer believes there is a window of opportunity for New Zealand to develop new industry based on robotics and the
associated area of intelligent automation. To take advantage of this requires the development of a substantial human
resource. Templer has built a world-class team with relatively little turnover despite a rising global demand for that
expertise.
Templer holds a PhD and represented New Zealand as a world leader in the supply of products, research and development in
food automation at an international government symposium.
