Number of New Dwelling Consents Increasing
Building consents were issued in October 2001 for 1,931 new dwelling units, worth $299.8 million, according to
Statistics New Zealand. This follows the authorisation of 1,678 new dwelling units, valued at $267.6 million, in
September 2001.
Following a decline since late 1999, the trend in the number of new dwellings has now been increasing since January
2001, although the number of new dwelling units per month is still significantly lower than in 1999. The actual number
of new dwellings has mostly ranged between 1,600 and 1,900 units since March 2001, whereas in 1999 the number was
regularly over 2,000.
An increase in new dwelling units was recorded in 10 of the 16 regions for October 2001, when compared with October
2000. There were 847 new dwelling units authorised in the Auckland region, which is the highest number since May 2000.
The total value of non-residential building consents issued in October was $291.0 million. Consents issued for hospitals
and nursing homes comprised $80.5 million (27.7%) of the total. Shops, restaurants and taverns contributed $49.0 million
(16.8%), followed by education buildings with $35.6 million (12.2%).
The total value of all building consents issued in October 2001 was $658.7 million.
