Vehicle registrations up slightly
Vehicle registration statistics released today by the Land Transport Safety Authority show an increase in the total
number of new and used imported vehicles registered in September 2001 compared with the same month last year.
There were 19, 439 first-time vehicle registrations last month, an increase of 907 (4.9 percent) on September 2000. The
number of registrations was down on August this year when 21,446 vehicles were registered for the first time.
Car registrations rose 5.2 percent from 14,367 in September 2000 to 15,112 last month. The number of car registrations
was down from August this year when 16,965 cars were registered.
Of the 15,112 first-time car registrations last month, 4,872 were new and 10,240 were used, compared with 5,265 new and
9,102 used in September 2000.
The market share leader for new car registrations in September was Holden with 19.27 percent, ahead of Ford with 17.75
percent and Toyota with 17.71 percent.
The three most popular models for the month were the Holden VX Commodore, the Toyota Corolla and the Ford Falcon.
Truck registrations for September were down 1.1 percent, from 1,929 last year to 1,908 this year. This was a decrease of
14.0 percent from the 2,218 trucks registered in August this year. Motorcycle registrations (over 60cc) were down
slightly from 271 in September 2000 to 265 last month (355 in August), while trailers were up from 1,486 to 1,501 (2,238
in August). Tractor registrations rose from 170 to 258 (305 in August), while bus registrations were down from 83 to 62
(84 in August).
