2001 REINZ PROPERTY JOURNALISM AWARD
WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The best of the best in property journalism were recognised in Auckland last night at the 2001 Real Estate Institute of
New Zealand Property Journalism Awards.
Journalists from throughout New Zealand gathered to celebrate excellence in property journalism.
The award for Best Property Portfolio went to New Zealand Herald’s Anne Gibson, who received $2,000 plus the President’s
Trophy.
The other finalist in this category was Sally Lindsay from The Property Business, whom judge Terry Hall said “submitted
and excellent range of articles”.
A new award, Best Lifestyle Portfolio was created for this years awards, designed to recognise the growing field of
property journalism focused on delivering articles describing New Zealand homes and how we live in them. The winner of
the inaugural award is NZ Home and Entertaining’s Claire McCall, and her colleague Penny Lewis was named runner up.
Jenni McManus of The Independent won Best Single Item – Commercial for her extensive investigative work on the Princes
Wharf development, while another Independent staffer, Jon Stephenson was runner up for his story on the floundering
fortunes of a $3.7 million Levin rest home and retirement development.
The winner of the Best Provincial Property Portfolio for the third consecutive year was Rhonda Joy Markby from the
Timaru Herald, for her “wide range of highly readable articles".
In her second award of the evening, Anne Gibson of the New Zealand Herald was awarded The Single Best Item –
Residential. There was heavy competition for this award, which attracted the highest number of entries, and Judge Terry
Hall noted the exceptionally high standard of this years entries. Andrew King of Residential Property Investor was named
runner up for his well researched article on proposals for residential rental properties to require a “certificate of
fitness”.
A story exploring the impact of the dairy industry monopoly on rural property values earned freelance journalist Chris
Hutching, writing for The Property Business the Best Single Item – Rural Award. Runner up, Campbell McIlroy of the
National Business Review, was commended for his article on the rising values for dairy properties.
For the second consecutive year, National Business Review journalist Campbell McIlroy won the RealENZ-sponsored Best
Single Item – Real Estate and Technology Award, for his article on the impact of e-commerce on the property business,
with the introduction of on-line leases.
The judge for this year’s Awards is one of New Zealand’s leading business journalists, Terry Hall. Mr Hall is the New
Zealand correspondent for The Financial Times in London and is a former business editor of The Dominion and former
managing editor of Reuters Economic Services.
