Finalists For The 3M Award For Innovation In Libraries
3M New Zealand Ltd and the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa are pleased to announce the finalists for the 3M Award for Innovation in Libraries.
The 3M Award is awarded annually and was established in 1996. The award is made to librarians, information specialist or teams who have applied an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to their business.
Nine entries were received this year and preliminary judging has resulted in a shortlist of three. The three finalists are; Auckland Regional Council Library, Manukau Institute of Technology Library and Southland Boys’ High School Library.
Auckland Regional Council’s entry was ARCADIA the database of Auckland Regional information, which acts as a one stop bibliographic database of material on Auckland. ARCADIA is available at www.infospecs.co.nz/arc/srch.htm
Manukau Institute of Technology Library’s entry was their Get Ready Go – online PowerPoint comic strip introduction to using library resources. The comic strip is intended to make students feel comfortable using the library and is viewed as an alternative to the traditional library orientation tour. The comic strip can be viewed at

Southland Boys’ High School’s entry is entitled Real Men Do Read Books and is based on their whole school literacy project. The project focuses on increasing and improving the quantity and quality of reading undertaken by the boys at the school using the school library as the delivery vehicle.
All three finalists will make presentations on 19th September at the annual conference of the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa in Rotorua.
The winner of the 3M Award will be announced at an evening function on 20th September.
