Julie Gets The Best Bargain

Shopper Julie Hill’s recent trip to Woolworths in Rangiora has uncovered more than the usual supermarket bargain.
She’s the winner of a $20,000 treasure trove and a trip for two to one of the South Pacific’s most prized tropical destinations.
Ms Hill has won Woolworths’ Buried Treasure competition, a nation-wide sales promotion run in late May and early June.
And to help her celebrate, Woolworths Rangiora is shouting Saturday shoppers a Bounty Bar and a tropical fruit drink each for two hours – served by Miss Bikini New Zealand and two hunky cohorts.
But before Ms Hill and a friend take off for the tropical climes of Vanuatu, she’ll have a small task ahead of her – dig for her treasure.
It’s all happening at Woolworths on the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets starting at 12.30pm and concluding at 2.30pm on Saturday.
The supermarket has imported a tropical island – a mound of sand – in which a Pirate’s casket containing the $20,000 prize cheque is buried.
To uncover her booty, Ms Hill will have to dig out the casket containing the cache.
Woolworths Rangiora team leader James Flannigan has assembled a few helpers to ensure Ms Hill and those who cheer her on do not flag in their endeavours.
“We have organised some of our local celebs to give Julie a hand,” Mr Flannigan said.
One is Ms Melanie Watson, the current Miss Bikini New Zealand who will also be on hand to sign autographs. Another is athletics Olympic hopeful Jeremy Dixon.
And to ensure dry throats do not get in the way of the sandy dig, Christchurch ‘mixologist’ and pin-up personality Johnno is mixing up tropical fruit punches for the prize-winner and onlookers alike.
“It’s been a fantastic competition,” Mr Flannigan says. “We’re really chuffed it has been won in Rangiora and we’re so happy for Julie.”
