HP Takes Number One Revenue Position in the Combined Unix/NT Server Market
Investment in sector pays dividends in
New Zealand
New Zealand, 21 June 2001 -- Hewlett-Packard (NZ) Limited today announced its leading position in the combined Unix/NT
server market following new research results from IDC Asia Pacific.
IDC results for the first quarter 2001 show HP is the revenue leader within the combined Unix/NT server market in New
Zealand. This sees HP take a two-point jump, from its previous third place in the last quarter of 2000, in the space of
only three months.
Barry Hastings, Managing Director of Hewlett-Packard (NZ) Limited says: “ This is a rewarding result for HP in New
Zealand. We have intensified our focus on this sector with increased investment, both in marketing spend and marketing
and sales manpower.”
Earlier this year HP NZ appointed Ian Walters, market development manager of server products, to lead the server
marketing efforts.
Commenting on the recent research results, IDC New Zealand’s country manager, Dinesh Kumar says the figures show that
Hewlett-Packard’s investment in the market has paid dividends.
“At the end of the last quarter, last year, HP was number three in the combined Unix/NT server market, behind both Sun
and IBM. The company has made wise investments in this area and has been rewarded with a two-point jump to the number
one position, heading off both Sun and Compaq, two very strong runners in the race.”
Mr Kumar added that in the global context, HP had also performed exceptionally well. “HP is number two in revenue for
the total server market and number two in revenue for the Unix market. It was the only major vendor to increase Unix
market share compared to the last quarter, last year.
“As well, HP has recaptured the number one position in Unix midrange and its 20% growth in high-end Unix with the
ramp-up of its Superdome solution comes at the expense of Sun, IBM and Compaq, who all lost significant market share at
the high end.”
Barry Hastings added that HP NZ intended to remain at the number one position in the server market. “Our continued
investment in the market and the roll out this year of new Itanium server products will ensure we maintain our new
place.”
