Director’s Biography: John A Hood

John Hood, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Auckland since February 1999, Chairman of Tonkin and Taylor Ltd, a Director of ASB Bank Ltd, Governor of the New Zealand Sports Foundation, Chairman of the Electoral College for Active New Zealand, a Trustee of the Asia 2000 Foundation, Secretary of the Rhodes Trust and a Director of Universitas 21 Ltd. He is a former director of many other companies and organisations.
From 1979 until 1997 Dr Hood was employed by Fletcher Challenge Ltd where he rose to be Chief Executive of the Construction and Property group followed by Chief Executive of Pulp and Paper. Throughout this time, he had extensive international business experience. He left Fletcher Challenge in 1997.
A Rhodes Scholar, Dr Hood has the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy and Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Auckland. He also has the degree of Master of Philosophy in Management Studies from Oxford.
