Tangent Offering Bandwidth-On-Demand - A First For NZ
In a New Zealand first, telecommunications service provider Tangent is offering bandwidth-on-demand to Auckland
businesses.
While bandwidth-on-demand is popular overseas, Tangent believes this is the first such product offering in this country.
Tangent General Manager Jill Garing says bandwidth-on-demand is particularly useful for companies that have varying
demands on their network capability in any one month.
"While network bandwidth is typically provided at a set capacity, the usage of bandwidth is dynamic."
Ms Garing says bandwidth-on-demand solves this issue and will be particularly useful as it allows businesses to tailor
their bandwidth to the demands on their network (e.g. end of month processing, implementation of major software packages
to the desktop, activating disaster recovery sites, etc).
"For instance, we're aware of at least one company that has to take some users off its system at the end of the month so
that the accounts processing can be accommodated," she says.
"There's also instances where companies need to send large files, but not necessarily every day of the week."
Ms Garing says bandwidth growth for most users is exponential and involves a compromise between the cost and time lag
for upgrading versus the need to be able to function efficiently.
"Bandwidth-on-demand allows customers to commit to initial bandwidth, safe in the knowledge that additional capacity can
be added (or subtracted) within minutes.
"It means that organisations can continue to conduct their business without disruption," says Ms Garing.
Under the new service, businesses can contract bandwidth at a certain level and then increase it incrementally to an
upper limit. Conversely if a business is using bandwidth at a higher level than the contracted base, it can reduce its
bandwidth requirements at any time.
"Bandwidth-on-demand provides customers with a seamless growth path to additional network capacity with little or no
additional capital cost."
