Telecom Mobile Secures Roaming On Telstra Australia’s CDMA Network
Telecom Mobile has finalised a significant deal with Telstra Australia by securing a roaming agreement to use Telstra’s
nationwide CDMA network. This is just part of the preparation for the launch of Telecom Mobile’s own CDMA network which
is on track for launch in the middle of this year.
“Over 70% of the demand for Telecom’s roaming services is for travel to Australia. Telstra’s network provides coverage
to over 97% of the Australian population, so with this deal Telecom’s customers will have the best trans-Tasman CDMA
coverage.” says Lorraine Witten, General Manager Mobile Networks.
“The deal paves the way to provide automatic seamless trans-Tasman roaming for Telecom CDMA customers at launch”.
“After the launch of CDMA, Telecom Mobile customers will be able to access many of the services they use in New
Zealand, using their own CDMA phone and 027 number.”
The Telstra roaming agreement is just one of the many that Telecom Mobile has signed to allow CDMA customers to roam to
major destinations around the world. Roaming agreements have also been signed with Canada’s Bell Mobility, USA’s Sprint
PCS, Hong Kong’s Hutchison (Orange) and Australia’s Hutchison (Orange) who operate a CDMA network in Sydney and
Melbourne. Telecom Mobile is currently negotiating several more roaming agreements.
“We will continue to approach carriers from the extensive world-wide pool of CDMA network providers to allow customers
to easily roam on CDMA networks while out of New Zealand.”
Telecom represents one of around 30 different countries who are members of the CDG (CDMA Development Group) working
towards global compatibility and interoperability among CDMA systems world-wide. There are now almost 90 million CDMA
subscribers throughout the world.
